Commercial vehicle operators who illegally use radar detectors in the United States have another reason to worry about being caught. It's Stealth Micro System's latest generation Radar Detector Detectors, the Spectre IV and Spectre IV+.

That's because federal law prohibits drivers of commercial motor vehicles from using radar detectors. In fact, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation 392.71 prohibits these drivers from even possessing a radar detector. Plus, radar detectors are illegal in all vehicles in Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

And although the radar detector manufacturers may say that their devices are undetectable, don't believe them. That's because of the hundreds of radar detector models certified for use in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission, the Spectre IV detects all but two. And it's just a matter of time until Spectre engineers succeed in detecting them too. That's because all radar detectors, including those that feature "cloaking" or "VG-2 Alert," work the same way. Radar detector makers can shift their local oscillator frequency or try to better shield their devices, but those steps are just temporary fixes.

Stalker Radar, the world leader in radar and laser speed measurement, is the exclusive United States distributor.

The Spectre IV and IV+ feature electronic circuit design enhancements for improved sensitivity, more accurate target acquisition, and greater range, while the Spectre IV+ has a unique control allowing the user to better isolate illegal radar detectors in commercial vehicles in locations where radar detectors are legal for private vehicles.

The Spectre IV and IV+ spot radar detectors by detecting electromagnetic "leakage" from a component common to every radar detector, the local oscillator. Some manufacturers try to screen out the leakage with shielding; others try to adjust the leakage to a frequency that the Spectre isn't sensitive to. So far all radar detector manufacturers have failed and their products are easily detected by the Spectre.

The Spectre IV and IV+ are about the size of a portable CD player and are mounted on the windshield of the patrol vehicle. They can be rotated 360 degrees so that it can detect detectors at all angles relative to the vehicle.

Sensitivity adjustment adapts detection to environment.

The Spectre IV+ features adjustable sensitivity, allowing the detector to be adapted to environments where radar detectors are common. Since the Spectre can detect many radar detectors at over 500 feet (some at close to 1,000 feet!), sometimes this degree of sensitivity can be a problem.

In “target-rich” environments – where radar detectors are generally legal – operators may not be able to easily distinguish among multiple signals. In that situation, the operator can adjust the Spectre’s sensitivity downward so that the detection threshold is much closer to the patrol vehicle.

This adjusted sensitivity, combined with proper RDD orientation, allows the officer to “scan” traffic for commercial vehicle offenders.
